Play GTA 2 online: current project status

A web version must be fast, easy to control and reliable. This page tracks what already works and what is still being prepared.

GTA 2 in a browser

Current status

There is currently no legal way to play GTA 2 in a browser

No engine for GTA 2 runs in a browser — the community reimplementation gta2_re is desktop-only and still in progress. The only route was emulating the whole of Windows on DOS.Zone, and Take-Two, which owns the brand, had it taken down with a DMCA request in April 2026. Sites offering “GTA 2 online” today distribute the game without the rights holder’s consent, so we don’t link to them.

You can play the first GTA in your browser, though — it runs on the open Carnage3D engine, with the same top-down view and the same chaotic chases.

Frequently asked questions

Can GTA 2 be played online in a browser?

Not legally. There is no web engine for GTA 2, and the only emulation, operated by DOS.Zone, was taken down at Take-Two’s request in April 2026.

What is gta2_re?

A community reimplementation of GTA 2 for computers. It is still in development and is not yet intended for browsers — if that changes, we will add it here.

How can I play GTA 2 today?

On a computer with your own copy of the game. You can find instructions for getting it running on modern Windows in the Platforms section.

Why don’t you add a link to websites where GTA 2 can be played online?

These websites distribute the game without the rights holder’s consent. We do not want to link to them — and you can play the first GTA in your browser instead.
