Platforms: Grand Theft Auto 2

GTA 2 appeared on four markedly different platforms. The differences extend beyond resolution to the time of day, sound, content and technical capabilities.

GTA 2 launched on 22 October 1999 simultaneously for Windows and PlayStation — unlike the first game, both main versions at once, not months apart. Sega Dreamcast got its port half a year later, on 1 May 2000 in North America and 28 July 2000 in Europe.

Last in line was the handheld version for Game Boy Color, made by Tarantula Studios in December 2000. It’s a noticeably simplified adaptation, not a transfer of the full game — GBC hardware limits forced a different approach to the map and missions.

Unlike GTA III or the first game, GTA 2 never got a remaster or an official re-release on modern platforms. Anyone wanting to play it today relies on original hardware or a period-appropriate PC copy.

Official releases

Windows PC

The most complete and configurable version supported both daytime and evening appearances and included the network features of its time.

PlayStation

The console release adapted visuals, performance and content to the limits of the original PlayStation; some elements of the PC version are absent.

Sega Dreamcast

The later port used the more powerful console and retained the evening atmosphere, but it is still not identical to the PC build.

Game Boy Color

The heavily simplified handheld adaptation retains the basic idea, but cannot technically or materially be regarded as a port of the full PC game.

Playing today

Modern Windows

The original PC game may require compatibility settings or a community wrapper. Check the origin of the files before downloading a third-party package.

Original consoles

Physical discs require suitable hardware and regional compatibility; no modern official GTA 2 remaster exists.

Emulation

An emulator can replace old hardware, but the user must provide their own lawfully acquired game image and, where required, a BIOS.

Browser

Unlike GTA 1 with Carnage3D, GTA 2 currently has no tested public WASM runtime suitable for this website.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the main questions about this subject

When did GTA 2 come out, and on what first?

22 October 1999, simultaneously for Windows and PlayStation. Dreamcast got its port half a year later (May 2000 in North America, July 2000 in Europe), Game Boy Color in December 2000.

Is the Game Boy Color version the same game as on PC?

No. It’s a noticeably simplified adaptation by Tarantula Studios, adjusted for the handheld’s limits — neither the content nor the technology matches the full PC version.

Is there a modern remaster of GTA 2, like GTA III or San Andreas got?

No. GTA 2 remains the only mainline 2D entry in the series without an official re-release on current platforms.

How does GTA 2 differ between PC and consoles?

The PC version is the most complete — it supports both day and night settings and period-appropriate networking. The PlayStation version drops some elements for performance reasons, with the Dreamcast port sitting in between.

Can I play GTA 2 in a browser like the first game?

Not directly. Unlike GTA 1, which has the proven open-source reimplementation Carnage3D, GTA 2 currently has no public WebAssembly runtime that could be safely integrated into this site.
