Six regions and a figure Rockstar withheld for three years

Rockstar named six regions and released images for each. With the extended look it added size ratios too — three times Red Dead 2. An area in kilometres, still not.

Checked 2 September 2026. The regions come from the official game website, not leaks.

Websites were answering “how big is the GTA 6 map?” with a figure years before Rockstar first said one. Those figures came from estimates based on the trailer or on leaked material, and were copied until they began to look like fact.

This page therefore draws a hard line. What Rockstar published carries a link — to its own website for the regions, and to the August 2026 interviews for the size, where the ratios were first given. What it did not announce is listed as unannounced, including the area in kilometres. Earlier games are included as documented examples, not predictions.

Where the game takes place

Leonida

GTA 6 takes place in the fictional state of Leonida, based on present-day Florida. Vice City is part of it, not the whole map — the relationship is reversed from earlier games: before, there was a city and its surroundings; now there is a state with a city inside it.

Regions

The names and descriptions come from the official game website

In May 2025, alongside the second trailer, Rockstar published pages for the individual regions and a set of official screenshots. The extended look of 27 August 2026 then showed them in motion for the first time — driving, walking, at night and in the rain. They are the only places we know for certain are in the map, and under what names.

Vice City

City

A present-day return to Vice City. Beaches, dense development, entertainment districts and waterfronts. The game's centre, but not the whole map.

Leonida Keys

Islands

A chain of southern islands connected by bridges. Based on the real Florida Keys.

Grassrivers

Wetlands

A vast marshland based on Florida's Everglades.

Mount Kalaga

National park

A wooded, hilly region that contrasts with the coast and city.

Port Gellhorn

Port city

A smaller waterside city with a different character from Vice City.

Ambrosia

Inland

An area away from the coast. Rockstar lists it among Leonida's regions.

Size

How big the map is

There is finally a figure from Rockstar. But it is a ratio, not an area.

Until August 2026 the studio said nothing about size. In interviews published alongside the extended look it gave ratios for the first time: the whole map is meant to be three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. Vice City alone is meant to be twice the size of Los Santos, and the built-up areas outside the city eleven times what surrounded Los Santos in GTA V.

Rockstar has not given an area in square kilometres, and still has not. The figures in kilometres you will find elsewhere are calculated from leaked map images, not stated by the studio — and there is still a wide gap between “three times Red Dead 2” and a specific area.

If Rockstar publishes an area, it will appear here with a source. Until then it is ratios, not kilometres.

Unannounced

  • What has not been announced about the map The area in square kilometres. Ratios yes, figures no.
  • What has not been announced about the map Whether the whole state is open from the start or unlocks as the story goes on.
  • What has not been announced about the map How many buildings can be entered.
  • What has not been announced about the map How far the sea goes and what is under the surface. The presentation showed diving, not its extent.
  • What has not been announced about the map Whether the map will be expanded after release.
  • What has not been announced about the map An official image of the whole map. Rockstar has not published one.

From the series' past

Documented examples, not a promise — the past cannot tell us what Rockstar will do now

GTA III

Liberty City was split into three islands unlocked through the story. A closed bridge was then a common way to keep players in the first area.

San Andreas

A state instead of one city: three cities with countryside between them. It unlocked in stages.

GTA V

Almost the entire map was accessible from the start, a change from everything before it.

Frequently asked questions

How big is the GTA 6 map?

According to Rockstar, three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. Vice City alone is meant to be twice the size of Los Santos. The ratios were given in interviews around the extended look in August 2026. Rockstar still has not stated an area in square kilometres, so you will not find such a figure here.

Is Vice City the whole map?

No. Vice City is one of six named regions in the state of Leonida. The relationship is reversed from older games: before, a city with surroundings; now, a state with a city inside it.

Which regions has Rockstar confirmed?

Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Mount Kalaga, Port Gellhorn and Ambrosia. The names and descriptions come from the official game website, where each region has its own page with screenshots, and all six were also seen in the extended look.

Is Leonida a real place?

No, it is fictional. It is based on present-day Florida — Leonida Keys correspond to Florida Keys and Grassrivers to the Everglades.

Will the whole map be available from the start?

It has not been announced. GTA V had almost the entire map open from the start; older games unlocked it through the story. That does not tell us what will happen now.

Where are the leaked map images?

Not here. We report the 2022 leak as an event, but we neither publish the leaked material nor link to where it can be found. It is subject to legal action, and distributing it is not the same as reporting on it.

Is there an official image of the whole map?

No. Images from the August 2026 leak are circulating, but they are not from Rockstar and we neither publish nor link to them. Officially there are only screenshots of the individual regions on the game's website.
